80s Awesomeness! ~ 46

What was known as quite possibly the worst longest running Broadway musical ever, Cats was a phenomenon. Experts still don't know why. Nor do they know why I saw it three times by 1990 and was the White Cat (pictured front, on her knees) at least twice for Halloween. Yeah, I loved this damn musical. Had I seen it as an adult, I'm sure I would have done a O_o but that didn't stop me from having a small Cats collection that included sheet music, the soundtrack as I believe a poster. And multiple show programs. My favorite musical ever.

If you couldn't tell, they're junkyard, feral cats. I can't remember if there's an actual plot to the show or if it's just random snippets from particular cats' lives and all their lives in general. But I do remember the ascension of one cat to heaven. At least I think. I can't remember if she was the one that sang 'Memory' or not.

My favorite Cat . . .

I love musicals and dancing. I had to go look for my VHS tapes of CATS. One day I will have to watch it again. The dancing in the clip you showed was amazing.

Now I want to go out and get the DVD! I haven't seen this in about 20 years!

Cats is based on the book Old Possum's Practical Book of Cats by T.S. Eliot. It's basically got nonsensical poems about cats.

Honestly, I do enjoy the music from Cats but haven't actually seen the musical :-(

CATS is still alive and well in the dance world! My 9 year old danced to Jellicoe in her end of the year show last May

You know what, I kind of half remember it being based off of a book. And it makes sense that the poems are nonsensical because the musical is that way too!

And I'm not surprised it's still thriving in the dance world either. The music is good and pretty timeless. When I was younger I had the White Cat's solos down pat.

You are certainly not alone in your love of this. I saw it so many times I can't count. I remember it on Broadway twice and touring in Florida at least 3 other times. I remember Rum Tug Tiger coming and sitting on my lap during his song as I was on the aisle! GRRR! It is based on T. S. Elliott's poetry and Grizabella, the old cat you mentioned is the one to get to go to heaven as the Jellico ball comes once a year and grants a worthy cat the honor...that's the main theme and the rest is intro to all the different kinds of cats in the alley/hall. See! I am also a CATS fan for sure...and yes, she sang Memories! Thanks as I will now be singing the music for days as I know all the words even..sad but true!. guess it could be worse!
PS...as I look, my word verification is the word "FURalit" weird coincidence?
