80s Awesomeness! ~ 45

Brooke Shields and Her Jeans!!!

Calvins were the "it" jeans back in the 80s (among other brands). They may not have been as well known as Jordache or Guess? but the chick in the jeans certainly helped them fly off the shelves. The big deal about Brooke Shields claiming nothing come between her and her Calvins? No, it wasn't the innuendo. Entirely. It was the fact that she was 14 and saying those things. Fourteen-year-olds don't look like that anymore (but that's something for another post) and she doesn't entirely look like a sexualized little girl (her face looks young but if I didn't know, I'd think her at least 18). But still, she was only 14 and insinuating she was naked under her clothes. Logically, duh, but just take a look at the commercial. It's not entirely innocent. The pose alone says loads without her even opening her mouth.

I had my Calvins back in the 80s (and Gloria Vanderbilts too) and they were cool! Which meant that I thought I was too, of course. I certainly didn't look like her as a 14 year-old but nobody did. Compared to current times though she looks like a baby. Those commercials were sleezy but would barely get noticed now. All the commercials are like that and teens don't look like teens.

Love your 80s Awesomeness! Can't wait to see what's coming next!

Thank you, Wrighty!

See, I think she looks more mature than today's 14-year-olds. Teens today look like teens trying to look older and I think it comes off that way. They might look older but they no look mature enough to actually be that age. While Brooke does have a baby face, I think she has the maturity behind that face to genuinely carry off an older age without much effort. Does that make sense?

Oddly, I kind-of disagree. I feel like 14 year olds of today are looking more like that than ever. Every time I meet a teenager of today, I am always shocked by how they seem to have skipped entirely over the "awkward phase," instead being these weird pseudo mature looking, sexualized beings.
Still, I can't believe she was 14 in that picture. Wow! Ohhhh, Brooke Shields. . .
