Things I've Learned from Books + 78

Mermaids and sirens are interchangeable creatures. Despite the fact one's half fish and the other's half bird. Scales, feathers, who's paying attention?

I think you mean harpies - the harpies are half bird, the sirens are the ones that sing death onto sailors.

Huh. I've only ever heard that sirens had fish parts and that harpies were the ones with the bird parts, but it does appear that I was mistaken. But it does make more sense, what with the voice thing.

Interesting. I feel that my college education has failed me in this regard, though. Still, yay for learning new things!

Nope, sirens originally had bird bodies. But harpies do too. I guess just their functions were different since one attracted and one repelled. I had a little bit of self-doubt there for a second!

I did not know that Sirens were half-birds at first hmm. Perhaps I should do some studying on my creatures =P

Funnily enough, I've just finished The Voyage of the "Dawn Treader", in which C.S. Lewis does his own bit of quick fudging. The captain is worried about the mermaids they unexpectedly come across because one of the crew might jump to his death for the love of one. It's not a bad amalgamation of two mythical beings, I think.
